A rare commodity: WATER FOR WATER trains water-supply specialists in Zambia.

Some 771 million people around the globe lack basic water supplies. Approximately 2.3 billion people have no access to sanitary facilities. The majority of these people live in sub-Saharan Africa or southern Asia. Zambia’s water-supply problems are economic in nature. That is, there is enough water, but there is simply a lack of money to set up secure water and sewage infrastructures.

Ensuring high-quality vocational training in the water sector is a central pillar in developing and maintaining reliable water supply systems. There is not enough vocational training in the water sector in Zambia due to a variety of challenges. WfW has been involved in vocational training since 2013. It has been developing a mandate for reforming vocational training in the Zambian water sector on behalf of the Ministry of Higher Education since 2020.

Project goal

  • Setting up an operational and productive training environment for would-be water specialists that meets modern educational requirements.
  • Providing grants to enable selected students to take part in courses.
  • Introducing the new teaching plan in "Water Supply and Sanitation Operations" (WASSOP) by clearly drawing up the teaching content and methodology and running the relevant course at Mansa Trades Training Institute.
  • Providing practical experience in the water sector by enabling students to attend workshops and communicating with various actors in the sector.

Project beneficiaries

The direct beneficiaries are 40 students from low-income backgrounds, the teaching staff and the vocational school itself. Well-trained specialists in the water sector are beneficial for local water supplies, local industry and the local labour market, but most importantly for the many people who currently have no access to clean drinking water or sanitation.
