By 2050, the world's population will grow to almost ten billion people, with an increase to 10.4 million forecast for Switzerland. This will increase the demand for protein-rich foods. At the same time, we are faced with the challenge of making food systems sustainable and resource-efficient. Cellular agriculture offers a possible answer to this: it supplements existing food production methods with new approaches, including cultivated meat.
A new building block for meat production
The Swiss start-up sallea has developed an edible base that mimics the fine network of fibres and connective tissue in meat. This natural scaffold enables animal cells to grow into a real piece of meat with a natural texture. With the support of the Migros Pioneer Fund, sallea wants to bring its scaffolds to market maturity and prepare for market entry.
Supplement for a sustainable food system
Together with partners from the food industry, sallea aims to promote the development of a sustainable food system with cultivated meat as a sustainable source of protein. The aim is to enable consumers to enjoy a resource-conserving, low-emission and animal-free diet in future – in short: sustainable, tasty food for all.
