The construction industry is one of the main producers of CO2, contributing 37 per cent of global emissions. This is mainly due to the use of concrete and its component cement, the production of which releases considerable amounts of CO2. However, sustainable alternatives often fail to meet the required fire and noise protection standards and are more expensive than concrete.
Earth and timber instead of reinforced concrete
Rematter wants to change this. Supported by the Migros Pioneer Fund, it plans to bring innovative, recyclable, low-emission building materials to the market. To this end, the project has developed a fully automated production process for floor slabs made of earth and timber, which produce 80% less greenhouse gas than comparable reinforced concrete floor slabs. The rammed earth used not only ensures a good indoor climate, it is also fully recyclable. The sponsorship aims to facilitate market entry and lay the (financial) foundations for automation.
For circular building
Rematter seeks to make its earth-timber floor slabs economically competitive so they can gradually replace concrete, advancing the decarbonisation of the building sector and a circular construction industry.
