SwissDGS: Renewable Energy from the Depths of the Earth

Achieving climate neutrality requires technologies for a CO2-neutral energy supply. Deep geothermal energy offers a promising option for the production of electricity and heat. Unlike wind and solar power, geothermal energy is a local energy source that is independent of the weather, time of day or season. At least potentially. This is because deep geothermal energy is still hardly utilised in Switzerland. Concerns about its safety, cost and scalability are too great.

Safe deep geothermal energy

Up until now. SwissDGS (Swiss Deep Geothermal Solutions) utilises a new technology using a closed-loop system, which is earthquake-proof and scalable. This could offer a safe and environmentally friendly alternative to current methods, such as fracking. Supported by the Migros Pioneer Fund, the project will be prepared for a trial. This requires finding partners and, above all, building trust in the new technology. In closed-loop deep geothermal energy, vertical and horizontal boreholes are connected to form a closed circuit. A fluid circulating within the system is intensely heated by the hot rock deep underground and can be utilised either as a heat source, e.g. for heating buildings, or converted into electricity.

For an independent energy supply

SwissDGS seeks to promote deep geothermal energy in Switzerland, making the energy supply sustainable and independent of raw materials.
