From 41.6 million tonnes of greenhouse gases to net zero by 2050: that is Switzerland's climate target. This cannot be achieved simply by reducing emissions through more efficient technology and renewable energies. It requires additional technologies and ways of removing previously emitted CO2 from the atmosphere. And then? Where to put it?
Secure storage
‘Underground’ - that's how the start-up Recoal sees it. The project has developed a technology that converts (waste) biomass into carbonisate under pressure and at a high temperature, which stores carbon permanently. The production facilities required for the process are to be integrated decentrally and directly into biogas plants. The carbonisate can then be stored safely, verifiably in local underground storage facilities without any environmental impact. The technology is to be brought to market with the support of the Migros Pioneer Fund. To this end, industrial feasibility and scalability are being tested as part of pilot projects.
A step towards net zero
Recoal wants to offer a simple, safe and efficient solution for the removal of CO2 and thus support Switzerland on its way to net zero.
