Theater Basel: Heidi’s coming home?

Die Mühle von Saint Pain («The Mill of Saint Pain»)

The old and legendary story of Krabat takes on a new form: Antú Romero Nunes tells the tale in the style of a noir western in the operatic play «Die Mühle von Saint Pain». Drama, dance, the Basel Sinfonietta, an opera singer and a Tingueley machine between them conjure up the black mill and its magical pull.

Eine Winterreise («A Winter Journey»)

An equally unique musical gem awaits audiences in «Eine Winterreise». Together with the great mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter, director Christof Loy has created an evening of intimate musicality inspired by the song cycle composed by Franz Schubert.

St Matthew Passion 

In his production of the St Matthew Passion, director Benedikt von Peter addresses the question of what the Passion means to a diverse society in which Christianity is becoming ever less relevant. 

Heidi

Richard Wherlock’s ballet «Heidi» is based on the Swiss classic and explores the themes of identity and belonging. Perhaps you really only discover what home is when you leave it or lose it – or if its existence is questioned.     

La fille mal gardée

To round off the programme, in «La fille mal gardée» the Belgian choreographer Jeroen Verbruggen turns one of our oldest and established stagings of this ballet, with its idyllic pastoral setting and its earthy characters, into a queer narrative ballet that takes delight in ambiguities and gender disorientation.
