The Tigray region in Ethiopia is still suffering the consequences of the two-year conflict that claimed over 600,000 lives and tore apart countless families. Despite a peace agreement having been signed at the end of 2022, the wounds run deep and many people are living in poverty and makeshift camps. Women and girls are particularly affected, as violence and harmful practices such as early and forced marriage are on the rise again.
Project goal:
Economic independence for women through the establishment of small businesses. Women are provided training to help them to set up their own small businesses, with the aim of achieving financial independence and lifting their families out of poverty. Literacy courses are also offered, as well as childcare centres to provide a safe environment for children and give mothers a degree of respite. The women receive psychosocial support and access to medical care.
Project beneficiaries:
150 women are the main beneficiaries. The direct beneficiaries also include 300 children who are receiving extra tuition, as well as 300 older children who are able to lead a better life thanks to the increased household income. In addition, other people will benefit directly from training programmes, for example in childcare.
