Promoting sustainable market gardening and beekeeping in 12 villages in Conakry, Guinea

The 10,000 inhabitants of the 12 villages rely mainly on small-scale crop cultivation and livestock rearing, earning less than CHF 1 a day. Their agricultural output depends on rainfall, but climate change is jeopardising their harvests and incomes. Faced with these challenges, the women have joined forces to develop market gardening.

Project objective:

The project supports these groups by creating two-hectare market gardens in each village. This involves digging wells, installing solar-powered pumps and fencing off the land. In parallel with this, the project promotes the development of sustainable beekeeping. At present, honey is harvested in ways that harm the swarms and the trees that house their hives. This component will include training for beekeepers, the provision of equipment, beehive distribution, the establishment of a honey processing centre and forest conservation.

Project beneficiaries:

The main beneficiaries are the 560 families in the 12 communities. The 10,070 inhabitants of the villages will also benefit from the project, since they will be able to eat the fruit, vegetables and honey and take advantage of the services provided.
