Windworks: A breath of fresh air for the energy transition

The wind is there - yet Switzerland makes hardly any use of it. While neighboring countries already generate several terawatt-hours of electricity from wind energy, its share here is just 0.3 percent. At the same time, the pressure to act is growing. Fluctuating energy prices highlight how dependent Switzerland still is on imports. Especially in winter, when solar and hydropower produce less electricity, wind could play a crucial role in ensuring security of supply.

Wind power is becoming smaller, smarter, more efficient

This is where Windworks comes in: the start-up develops compact, vertical-axis wind turbines with a maximum height of 30 meters, deliberately setting itself apart from conventional wind power solutions. At the heart of the system is a proprietary adaptive blade control technology that continuously adapts the orientation of rotor blades to changing wind conditions, enabling significantly higher energy yields. Thanks to their smaller size, the turbines can be installed, for example, on farms or company premises, and the permitting process is considerably simpler than for large wind parks. With support from the Migros Pioneer Fund, the first pilot installations are to be realized and the technology brought to market readiness.

A lever for the energy transition

Windworks specifically targets farmers, companies, and municipalities with their own land, offering them an additional way to produce energy year-round. In doing so, the company makes an important contribution to greater energy sovereignty and security of supply—both for individuals and for Switzerland as a whole.
