These days, we are experiencing the consequences of climate change first-hand: heatwaves on the one hand, heavy rainfall that turns streams into torrents on the other. At the same time, more and more surfaces are being sealed so that water cannot seep away, and animals and plants are deprived of their habitat. What we need is holistic spatial planning and urban development. Put simply: more green spaces that provide shade, absorb rainwater, cool neighbourhoods by a few degrees and leave enough space for nature to survive. Scientific studies have long called for systemic solutions. But in practice, there is a lack of awareness, knowledge and implementation examples.
Resilient urban areas for a better future
With the support of the Migros Pioneer Fund, Formel Siedlungsnatur is tackling this problem and creating the basis for more nature-orientated and climate-resilient residential areas. Through its initial project Grünes Gallustal in St.Gallen, Formel Siedlungsnatur has shown that it is possible to unite all stakeholders – environmental organisations, administrations, planners and citizens – and jointly develop sustainable and practicable solutions for more green spaces. The experience gained in St.Gallen will inform a methodology that can be applied across Switzerland. As a first step, the concept will be transferred to Eastern Switzerland; later, it will be rolled out nationwide.
Healthy living spaces for all of us
In this way, Formel Siedlungsnatur aims to drive forward the ecological transformation of Swiss municipalities and cities. Its aim is to create healthy, resilient and high-quality habitats for people and nature – and preserve them sustainably. For everyone’s future.
