Alexandre Babel, * 1980 in Geneva, lives in Berlin. As a percussionist, composer and curator, Alexandre Babel is recognized as a reference in the experimental music scene and in the interpretation of 20th and 21st century repertoire. His innovative projects break through the boundaries of musical conventions by thwarting listeners' expectations in the conquest of new contexts. After studying in New York and at the Haute Ecole de Musique de Genève, Babel was a member of the Ensemble KNM Berlin and a founding member of the performance collective RADIAL. He has collaborated with a variety of bands and artists, including Ensemble Musikfabrik, the noise rock band Sudden Infant, Anthony Pateras, Caspar Brötzmann, Carol Robinson, Tristan Perich, Félicia Atkinson, Ryoji Ikeda. In 2020, the monographic festival Les Amplitudes in La Chaux-de-Fonds put Babel's compositional and curatorial work center stage. In 2022, he worked with the artist Latifa Echakhch at the Swiss Pavilion of the 59th Venice Art Biennale. Winner of the 2021 Swiss Music Prize, Babel was artistic director of the contemporary percussion collective Eklekto until 2022.

Project

The installative composition "InnenWelten" deals with the diverse processes in our bodies. And what happens to us when we not only see ourselves as part of the world, but also recognize ourselves as part of our own multi-part ecosystem.
"InnenWelten" is part of the project "That weightless flesh is our relative", which is being developed in collaboration with the Mexican percussionist Rubén Bañuelos and the composer Luis Fernando Amaya. The project works with material and instruments that can be found all over the world. All information on the pieces will be made available as open source after the end of the project, in the hope of contributing to a network of worldwide music creation. Parallel to the composition, an inclusive and new concert format for festivals will be developed.
