Evolium Technologies: a second life for rechargeable batteries

Lithium-ion batteries can be found in every e-bike and e-scooter these days. Although they are recycled in Switzerland, they are only insufficiently reused. This means that many valuable and actually functional cells are lost, as they are not filtered out in the current process. Changing that would be an important step towards sustainable and future-proof energy utilisation.

Upcycling instead of wasting resources

This is where Evolium Technologies comes in: the start-up has developed a method for upcycling batteries, making them recyclable and therefore longer lasting. To this end, Evolium Technologies is working on a way of using a specially developed robot to remove the still-functional cells and use them as components of new, repairable and modular storage media for photovoltaic systems. Instead of wasting valuable resources, the cells become part of an energy storage system. The funding from Migros Pioneer Fund supports Evolium Technologies in entering the market and building a functioning ecosystem to lay the foundation for successful scaling.

A sustainable energy solution

Through upcycling, Evolium wants to add an additional life cycle stage to lithium-ion batteries and at the same time create a new way of storing electricity from renewable energies.
