apricot 366 – a way to store energy in winter

In summer, Switzerland generates increasing volumes of solar energy – often more than is actually needed. In winter, the situation is the other way around: energy demand rises due to heating and the need for more lighting, while production from renewable sources falls. This situation is referred to as the "winter energy gap" and is one of the largest challenges posed by the energy transition. The question is how can the increase in demand in winter still be met using renewable energy?

Aluminium for sustainable storage

apricot 366 provides an answer to this conundrum. The start-up uses aluminium granules to store renewable energy for the long term. During production, electrical energy is converted into chemical energy. The granules act as an energy store for this purpose. They can be stored in cupboard-sized containers to save space and provide energy when needed.  Residential and office buildings can thus be supplied with electricity and heat from renewable energy sources in winter. With the support of the Migros Pioneer Fund, the aim is to bring the product to market-readiness and launch the first pilot projects.

From the winter energy gap to energy independence

apricot 366 hopes to make a significant contribution to Switzerland’s energy transition. A climate-neutral energy supply can only be achieved if renewable energy is able to not only be produced, but also stored and transported. With its solution, the start-up will make energy available all year round, thereby contributing to ensuring the security of energy supplies and stable energy prices.
